  Site Name:  Tar Lake Superfund Site
  Size:  Approximately 200 acres
  Supported Site Uses: Recreational, Industrial and Commercial
  Existing Site Infrastructure:  Water and electrical utilities are
  available at the site.  Sewer service extension to the site is pending.
  Readiness for Use:
  Ready now: Approximately 195 acres are ready for use.
  Ready in the future: Approximately four acres which contain the Tar
  Lake ground water  biosparge system are  unavailable for use at this
  time.
                        Mancelona, Michigan
                        The site is located in Antrim
                        County, Michigan, just east of
                        Highway 131 and approximately
                        one mile south of Mancelona
                        Township, Michigan.
  SETTING:
  •  The site is situated in a rural area characterized
    by a low-density mix of residential, commercial,
    recreational and industrial development.
  •  There are several lakes and ponds in the immediate
    vicinity of the Tar Lake site.
  •  Surrounding population:  0.5 mile, 416 people; 2.5
    miles, 3,146 people; 4 miles, 4,257 people.

  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  •  Antrim County conducted a reuse planning process
    for the site in 1999. Reuse plans include a snowmobile
    center, an Antrim County Iron Works  Company
    museum, a technical training facility, a technical skills
    center, a community center, a senior citizens center
    that includes assisted living and daycare facilities, a
    public park, and commercial and light industrial land
    uses.
REMEDIAL STATUS:
•  Remediation of the Tar Lake site is complete.
•  The site's remedy has involved excavation and off-
  site disposal of over 68,000 tons of tar/creosote
  waste and contaminated soils.
•  Ground water remediation and  monitoring  is
  expected to continue through 2008,  at which time
  the site may be deleted from the National Priorities
  List.
