Brownfields Sustainability Pilot Fact Sheet Samoa Peninsula EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states. communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical assistance to support communities in achieving greener, more sustainable assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment at their brownfields projects. These pilots will also serve as models for other communities across the country. Project Description EPA has selected the Samoa Peninsula as a Brownfields Sustainability Pilot. Humboldt County, California is supporting the redevelopment of the Samoa Peninsula, a 171 acre former lumber mill and sash factory. The County conducted a Phase II environmental site assessment funded by an EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant and found high levels of lead and other chemicals from past mill operations. EPA assistance will help Humboldt County with developing green design and building standards for the conversion of the former lumber mill into new commercial, residential, and recreational uses. The County wants to incorporate Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Neighborhood Development Principles into the proposed project and needs to modify local standards to support the green elements. The community desires a sustainable development project to preserve the historic character of the area, as well as attract new business ventures to increase employment and revenue.
