Brownfields Sustainability

            Pilot Fact Sheet

           Moran Center

EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical
assistance to support communities in achieving greener,
more sustainable assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment
at their brownfields projects. These pilots will also serve
as models for other communities across the country.

Project Description

EPA has selected the Moran Center in Burlington,
Vermont as a Brownfields Sustainability Pilot. The
Moran Center is a public-private partnership that will
green the adaptive reuse of a former coal-fired electric
generating plant on Burlington's waterfront.
Environmental concerns at the property stem from its
historic use and the use of the adjacent property as a bulk
petroleum storage site. The project calls for the blighted
Moran building to be renovated according to Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards
which include green roof technologies, alternative energy
production as well as energy efficiency and conservation
measures.
EPA assistance will provide the Burlington Community
and Economic Development Office with design plans for
effective stormwater management, green infrastructure
and enhancement of wetlands at the site. These plans will
assist in creating a variety of year round recreational and
educational activities that will enhance access to Lake
Champlain and expand the Waterfront Park. The Moran
development will also be a catalyst for ecological
enhancements of the northern portion of the downtown
waterfront area.
