Brownfields Sustainability Pilot Fact Sheet Jackson Square EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states. communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical assistance to support communities in achieving greener, more sustainable assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment at their brownfields projects. These pilots will also serve as models for other communities across the country. Project Description EPA has selected Jackson Square as a Brownfields Sustainability Pilot. Urban Edge, a community development corporation, is assisting in the redevelopment of Jackson Square, an urban area at the intersection of the Roxbury and Jamaica Plain neighborhoods of Boston. Contamination of soil and groundwater from past industrial activities, as well as contaminated urban fill, pose public health risks to the local residents. EPA assistance will support a technical analysis which evaluates a variety of green building, stormwater management and green infrastructure approaches. As a result of the pilot, Urban Edge and its partners in the Jackson Square Redevelopment Initiative will receive the most appropriate and cost effective green roof system for early phase buildings at their brownfields project. A green roof system that helps to improve site conditions is a critical part of the larger effort to convert underutilized land in Jackson Square into a vibrant, environmentally sustainable, mixed use development. i f Technical Assistance: Green Roof Analysis Technical Assistance Recipient: Urban Edge Project Focus: Technical analysis of green roof systems for Jackson Square in Roxbury, MA Funding Amount: $25,000 For further information, including additional technical assistance information, brownfields news and events, and publications and links, visit the EPA Brownfields Web site at: www.epa.gov/brownfields.
