Brownfields Sustainability

            Pilot Fact Sheet

          Allen Morrison

EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical
assistance to support communities in achieving greener,
more sustainable assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment
at their brownfields projects. These pilots will also serve
as models for other communities across the country.

Project Description

EPA has selected the Allen Morrison property in the City
of Lynchburg, Virginia as a Brownfields Sustainability
Pilot. Property use dates back more than 100 years and it
was home to a farm wagon manufacturer, a metal sign
making plant, a chemical company, and a veneer
company. Public health and safety concerns from past
industrial activities and a desire to provide additional
recreational facilities prompted the city to redevelop the
property.
EPA assistance will support the development of building
materials deconstruction and reuse plans as well as the
community's involvement in the pilot. The City and its
project partners are committed to creating a public park
on the former Allen Morrison site to serve both the
neighborhood and the larger community, while promoting
the principles of Sustainability and active living.
