Brownfields Sustainability

             Pilot Fact Sheet

             Focus: Hope

EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical
assistance to support communities in achieving greener,
more sustainable assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment
at their brownfields projects. These pilots will also serve as
models for other communities across the country.

Project Description

EPA has selected Focus: HOPE to receive a Brownfields
Sustainability Pilot. Focus: HOPE is a civil and human
rights nonprofit organization in Detroit, Michigan, whose
programs include education, training, and economic
development initiatives for the local community. The
nonprofit also aims to revitalization the Oakman East
neighborhood. This neighborhood includes a mix of former
industrial and commercial operations including a metal
fabrication facility, warehouses, and service station.
Oakman East was the subject of the 2008 National
Brownfields Conference Design Charrette. Focus: HOPE
and their partners seek to implement several
recommendations from the charrette. To help facilitate
these recommendations, EPA assistance will be used for
site planning, green building design, stormwater
management, green infrastructure design, and native
landscaping at four adjoining properties. Proposed mixed
used redevelopment includes commercial, park and
greenway, and affordable housing.
