EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical
assistance to support communities in achieving greener,
more sustainable assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment
at their brownfields projects. These pilots will also serve
as models for other communities across the country.

Project Description

EPA has selected the Langdale and Riverdale Mills in
Valley, Alabama as a Brownfields Sustainability Pilot.
The two former textile mills operated from 1860 to the
late 1990s and were once the major economic engines for
the community. The City of Valley received EPA
Brownfields Assessment and Cleanup grants for each mill
and the community is also receiving EPA Smart Growth
Training.

The City of Valley will use EPA's assistance for
Sustainability planning as well as to create an inventory
for materials that can be reused or recycled from the
Langdale and Riverdale Mills. The City owns several
abandoned mills and would like to promote sustainable
redevelopment by inventorying mill contents, evaluating
the potential for reuse and recycling, and developing
materials to assist other mill redevelopment projects. A
mixed use redevelopment is planned at the brownfields
project.
