EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical
assistance to support communities in achieving greener,
more sustainable assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment
at their brownfields project. These pilots are
demonstration projects that will serve as models for other
communities across the country.

Project Description

EPA has selected the Greenville Workforce Housing
Project in Greenville, South Carolina as a Brownfields
Sustainability Pilot. Greenville is redeveloping a former
service station and adjacent supermarket into affordable
workforce housing on a combined site. Environmental
issues include underground storage tanks, demolition and
disposal of materials with asbestos and lead paint.

EPA's assistance will be used to incorporate sustainable
features such as porous surfaces, rain gardens, and green
building concepts into the City's redevelopment plans.
This project will help to accommodate the City of
