Brownfields Sustainability Pilot Fact Sheet Greenville Workforce Housing Project EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states. communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA's Brownfields Sustainability Pilots provide technical assistance to support communities in achieving greener, more sustainable assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment at their brownfields project. These pilots are demonstration projects that will serve as models for other communities across the country. Project Description EPA has selected the Greenville Workforce Housing Project in Greenville, South Carolina as a Brownfields Sustainability Pilot. Greenville is redeveloping a former service station and adjacent supermarket into affordable workforce housing on a combined site. Environmental issues include underground storage tanks, demolition and disposal of materials with asbestos and lead paint. EPA's assistance will be used to incorporate sustainable features such as porous surfaces, rain gardens, and green building concepts into the City's redevelopment plans. This project will help to accommodate the City of Greenville's need for affordable workforce housing that is healthier and more sustainable.
