The Office of the Great Lakes Coordinator was established in January,
1972, to assist the Regional Administrator in his responsibilities for coor-
dination with the International Joint Commission, the Great Lakes Basin com-
mission, interagency studies and investigations on the Great Lakes, and the
other EPA Regions involved in the Great Lakes. A staff of two professionals
assists the Great Lakes Coordinator to carry out the functions of the office.

The Coordinator provides the principal liaison for the Regional inter-
face with the International Joint Commission. This includes the activities of
the Great Lakes Water Quality Board, and the Lake Levels Board. He coordi-
nates activities required for implementation of the U.S.-Canadian Great Lakes
Water Quality Agreement. He also maintains contacts with Headquarters Office
of International Affairs and provides coordination with Region II and III when
their areas of interest are affected.

The Coordinator serves as alternate to the Regional Administrator on
the Great Lakes Basin Commission and coordinates Regional participation in
GLBC programs, both within Region V and between Region V, II and III.

He also serves as EPA representative on the Board for the Great Lakes-
St. Lawrence Seaway Navigation Season Extension Demonstration Program. He
coordinates EPA activity in this interagency program.

The Coordinator supervises the development, review, and approval of
proposals for planning and demonstration grants under Section 15 of the Water
Pollution Control Act and provides coordination with Regions II and III as
required.

He also collaborates with other Regional program officials in planning
broad and related programs for the Great Lakes.
