Wacker Dr. Chicago, Illinois 60606 312-353-5800 The Indiana District Officf The Indiana District Office is Region Vs field representative in the State of Indiana providing support for water pollution control programs. The staff, composed of engineering, laboratory, field support and clerical personnel, provides support for such programs as Enforcement, Refuse Act Permit Program, surveillance and technical support. The Office operates water quality monitoring stations from which samples are collected and analyzed periodically. It makes point source surveys of industrial and municipal discharges and studies their effects on streams in regard to water quality and aquatic organisms. It responds to and investigates oil and hazardous chemical spills in order to insure that the material is cleaned up and that water users are notified of the potential hazard to health. The chemistry unit of the laboratory section provides chemical data on routine water quality concentrations for the more common parameters and heavy metals, identifies and quantifies specific organic pollutants, and identifies petroleum products. The chemistry unit provides chemical analyses of the above samples from surface waters, municipal of industrial wastes, carbon filter chloroform extracts, sediments, fish, and oil and hazardous material spills. The data gathered is used for enforcement conferences, 180-day notice hearings, 1899 Eefuse Act and Ľater Quality Standards violations, Refuse Act Permits, development of analytical methodology within the framework of EPA's AQC laboratory, long term surveillance, monitoring oil and hazardous spills, commenting on Environmental Impact Statements, comprehensive basin plans and the identification of toxic materials. The Indiana Office represents EPA at all State meetings of the Indiana Stream Pollution Control Board and at all important meetings of environmental organizations in Indiana.
