EPA Brownfields Program

EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, tribes.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA
funds eligible applicants through assistance agreements to
provide training, research, and technical assistance to
facilitate brownfields revitalization.

Organization Description

The National Brownfield Associations (NBA) manages
chapter networks in 21 states and provinces, and provides
more than 1,200 members with the best information,
education, and events for sustainable brownfield
development. The NBA's network and chapters are
constantly expanding. The NBA's goal is to have chapters
in all 50 U.S. states by 2012. The NBA has prepared and
offered many successful educational programs and has
received funding from other federal, state, provincial, and
city government agencies in the United States and
Canada.

Project Description

NBA will develop a comprehensive, five-year nationwide
outreach campaign that will inform stakeholders,
including local leaders, about sustainable development
practices related to brownfields cleanup and reuse, and
about the key resources that are available at the national
and local levels. This campaign will include developing a
course on sustainable development and reuse of
brownfields and offering it in all 50 states to a wide range
of public and private stakeholders. Priority will be given
to stakeholders from underserved and smaller
communities, as well as to communities with severe
redevelopment challenges. The NBA also will compile a
