A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Additionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism. Community Description The City of Hinesville was selected to receive a brownfields cleanup grant. Located in scenic coastal Georgia, Hinesville (population 30,392) is a growing regional trade and service center with an economy based on manufacturing and tourism. The targeted cleanup site is in a richly diverse ethnic community in downtown Hinesville, where 36.2 percent of residents are minorities and the poverty rate is 17.3 percent. More than 30 petroleum-contaminated brownfields have been identified within this community.
