"Since its launch, SmartWay has been a great example of the
government working with private industry toward a common goal.
Increasingly, companies are becoming cognizant of their carbon
footprint and reducing greenhouse gases, however, fuel efficiency
has always been of critical importance for trucking and ATA, which
is why our participation in EPA SmartWay is a no-brainer. We're
proud of our history with the program and honored to be a leader in
improving freight sustainability."

Significant Environmental Accomplishments
The American Trucking Associations was one of the original SmartWay Charter Partners who
provided input and guidance in the development of the program. In February 2004, EPA
Administrator Michael Leavitt, Charter Partners, and SmartWay officially launched the program
at ATA's annual meeting in Washington, DC. Since 2006, ATA has twice been presented the
SmartWay Excellence Award by EPA as an affiliate member in recognition of high performance
in leading the business community to a clean, efficient, and more sustainable future for goods
movement.
In 2008, ATA continued to build upon the success of SmartWay by unveiling the first-ever
sustainability plan for trucking incorporating SmartWay as one of the six key pillars to reduce
trucking's carbon footprint. ATA's proactive agenda includes:
1) Increasing fuel efficiency through EPA's SmartWay Program
2) Enacting a national 65 mph speed limit and governing truck speeds at 65 mph for trucks
manufactured after 1992
3) Supporting national fuel economy standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks which rely on
feasible and proven technologies
4) Decreasing discretionary idling
5) Reducing highway congestion through highway infrastructure improvements
6) Promoting more productive truck combinations
This plan has the potential to reduce trucking's fuel consumption by 85 billion gallons
and carbon emissions by 900 million tons over a 10-year period
ATA looks forward to its continued role in growing the SmartWay program and
educating the freight sector on measures to save fuel, reduce emissions, and
improve the environment in which we live.
