July 30, 1999 EPA-SAB-CASAC-CON-99-007 Honorable Carol M. Browner Administrator U. S. Environmental Protection Agency 401 M Street, SW Washington, DC 20460 Subject: Notification of a Consultation on the PM2.5 Chemical Speciation Network and the Supersites Program Plan Dear Ms. Browner: The Technical Subcommittee for Fine Particle Monitoring of the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) of the Science Advisory Board (SAB) met via public teleconference on July 29, 1999 to consult with staff of the offices of Air and Radiation and Research and Development on data summaries from the PM2.5 speciation sampler intercomparison study, the updated speciation guidance document, the Supersites Request for Assistance (RFA), and the Atlanta and Fresno Supersites Plans. The Subcommittee has planned a formal meeting for late this calendar year to discuss this matter more fully. The SAB has developed the Consultation as a mechanism to advise the Agency on technical issues that should be considered in the development of regulations, guidelines, or technical guidance before the Agency has taken a position. A Consultation is conducted under the normal requirements of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which include advance notice of the public meeting in the Federal Register. As is our customary practice, there will be no formal report from the SAB as a result of this consultation, nor do we expect any formal response from the Agency. Sincerely, Dr. Joe Mauderly, Chair Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee Science Advisory Board ------- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) Chair Dr. Joe Mauderly, Director of External Affairs, Senior Scientist, Director of National Environmental Respiratory Center, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Albuquerque, NM Members Mr. John Elston, Administrator, Office of Air Quality Management, State of New Jersey, Department of Environmental Protection and Energy, Trenton, NJ Dr. Philip K.
