Brownfields 2013 Cleanup Grant Fact Sheet
WaterFire Providence, Rl
EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002,
the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields
Revitalization Act was passed to help states and
communities around the country cleanup and revitalize
brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive
grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund
grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants.
Additionally, funding support is provided to state and
tribal response programs through a separate mechanism.
Cleanup Grants
$600,000 for hazardous substances
EPA has selected WaterFire Providence for three
brownfields cleanup grants. Hazardous substances
grant funds will be used to clean up Parcels A, B,
and C of the former Uniroyal US Rubber Plant
site, located at 475, 485, and 495 Valley Street in
Providence. The larger site was an integral part of
a large industrial complex that was subdivided a
number of times over the past 50 years. It currently
consists mostly of paved areas and a loading dock.
One of the structures located on the site include a
one-story warehouse building constructed in 1929.
Environmental concerns include the presence of
metals, semi-volatile organic compounds, and
arsenic. Parcel C also is contaminated with PCBs.
Grant funds also will be used to conduct
community outreach activities.
