Brownfields 2010 Assessment Grant Fact Sheet
Woodlawn, OH
EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002,
the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields
Revitalization Act was passed to help states and
communities around the country cleanup and revitalize
brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive
grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund
grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants.
Additionally, funding support is provided to state and
tribal response programs through a separate mechanism.
Community Description
The Village of Woodlawn was selected to receive a
brownfields assessment grant. Woodlawn (population
2,860) is an industrial community located in the Mill
Creek Valley corridor of Hamilton County. Within the
village"s industrial corridor, there are many companies
that handle or have handled chemicals and other
hazardous substances. Some companies have gone out of
business, leaving behind abandoned and contaminated
properties. The village"s main source of revenue is tax
revenues primarily from the commercial business and
industry sectors. Job losses in these sectors have adversely
affected the economy, and the village"s unemployment
rate is higher than the county rate. The village has
developed a Master Plan that features a brownfields
redevelopment initiative. Brownfield assessments are
expected to help implement the Master Plan, which will
encourage cleanup and redevelopment of brownfields.
Assessment Grant $200,000 for hazardous
substances
EPA has selected the Village of Woodlawn for a
brownfields assessment grant. Community-wide
hazardous substances grant funds will be used to
conduct between eight and 12 Phase I and between
four and six Phase II environmental site
assessments. Grant funds also will be used to
support community outreach activities.
