) Brownfields 2014 Cleanup Grant Fact Sheet
~ Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, Easton, MD
EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002,
the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields
Revitalization Act was passed to help states and
communities around the country cleanup and revitalize
brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive
grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund
grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants.
Additionally, funding support is provided to state and
tribal response programs through a separate mechanism.
Cleanup Grant
$150,000 for hazardous substances
$50,000 for petroleum
EPA has selected the Eastern Shore Land
Conservancy for a brownfields cleanup grant.
Hazardous substances and petroleum grant funds
will be used to clean up at 114-130 S. Washington
Street in Easton for eventual transformation to the
Eastern Shore Conservation Center. The property,
located within Easton's National Register Historic
District, comprises the former McCord Laundry
Building, which closed in 2009, and five adjacent
1850s row houses, which have been vacant since a
2012 fire. Contaminants include drycleaning
fluids and fuel oil. Grant funds will be used to
guide the cleanup effort, remove and dispose of
contaminated soil, install impervious materials to
prevent stormwater infiltration, and remove three
underground storage tanks.
