SmartWay* MENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY » U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY EPA-designated "SmartWay Elite" Trailers EPA's SmartWay Transport Program is a market-driven partnership to help busi- nesses move goods in the cleanest, most efficient way possible. By providing a consistent set of tools and information needed to make informed transportation choices, SmartWay enables companies across the country to benchmark performance data in ways that protect our environment, encourage eco- nomic vitality, and enhance our nation's energy security. EPA's SmartWay Technology program helps carrier fleets make informed business decisions to save fuel and improve their supply chain efficiency. This new program element is part of the 2OI5 SmartWay trailer program updates that include adding large refrig- eration trailers and incorpo- rating multiple aerodynamic performance evaluation tools. EPA's SmartWay Technology Program has expanded to include a higher perfor- mance tier, the "SmartWay Elite" trailer. What are EPA-designated "SmartWay Elite" trailers? EPA-designated "SmartWay Elite" trailers are traditional 53-foot box dry van or refrigerated trailers equipped with a combination of SmartWay-verified low-rolling resistance tires and SmartWay-verified aerodynamic devices to obtain a total of 1 0% or more fuel savings over traditional trailers. At least 9% of these fuel savings come from a combination of 2 or more SmartWay-verified aerodynamic devices; these combinations are known as "SmartWay Elite Aerodynamic Technology Combinations." How are SmartWay Elite Aerodynamic Technology Combinations defined? SmartWay Elite Aerodynamic Technology Combinations may be created in two ways: 1) by combining individually-verified aerodynamic components listed on the SmartWay website that total 9% or more benefit; or 2) by selecting a SmartWay Elite Aerodynamic Technology Combination "package" that is listed on the SmartWay website has been tested and verified by EPA to perform at Elite levels (9% fuel savings or higher). Fleets managers have the flexibility to combine individually-verified components and can expect good performance; however, they may need to assess the devices' interactive effects during use. When a trailer is equipped with both SmartWay-verified low-rolling resistance tires and a SmartWay Elite Aerodynamic Technology Combination, it is eligible for the SmartWay Elite trailer designation. SmartWay trailers achieve a total of 6% or more fuel savings over traditional trailers. At least 5% of these fuel savings will come from reducing wind drag with one or more aerodynamic devices verified by EPA, and an additional 1% or more in savings is achieved through low-rolling resistance tires. What are the benefits of a SmartWay Elite trailer? EPA's new SmartWay Elite designation defines trailers that achieve the highest levels of aerodynamic performance currently available. Selecting trailers from EPA's SmartWay Elite category allows fleet managers can invest in trailers that provide maximum fuel-savings when used in high-speed, long-haul operations. Atypical tractor using a SmartWay Elite trailer (i.e., low-rolling resistance tires and Elite aerodynamics) could save about 1,700 gallons of diesel annually. Aerodynamics on trucks will perform differently depending upon driving speeds, tractor and trailer set-up, and the weather. The SmartWay verification program guides fleets managers to devices with demonstrated performance using controlled verification testing at high-speed cruise conditions (for consistent comparison). Even though some fleets may see fuel savings higher than the EPA verified levels, many fleets may operate at lower speeds. EPA is conducting research to provide fleets with information on how they might adjust fuel savings estimates based on their unique operating conditions. These are still significant savings and smart business.
