EPA Region 10, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Washington State University
Extension, and the Washington State Department of Health collectively recommend schools use integrated
pest management (IPM) as a means to reduce the risk of pests and pesticide exposure to children. The
following letter of support from these organizations announces upcoming training and networking events
and provides links to IPM resources: http://www.epa.gov/region 10/pdf/pesticide/final_school_ipm_

Is your school district interested in recognition for your pest management program?
Does your school district:
• only allow pesticides to be applied by a certified pesticide applicator?
• have a designated integrated pest management (IPM) coordinator that receives regular training?
• have a written IPM policy?
• use a check sheet to address pest conducive conditions and pest problems in your facilities?
Your district may be eligible for EPA's new pilot school IPM recognition program for K-12 public and
tribal school districts. EPA will present your district with an award at a school board meeting, local
PTA meeting, or meeting of your choice. We will also highlight your program on our Web site and in
our newsletter. Contact Juliann Barta, 206-553-1495, barta.juliann@epa.gov to learn more.
