X"^ .SJR?) ^ Mercer County Improvement Authority, NJ Brownfields 2014 Cleanup Grant Fact Sheet EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states. communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help states and communities around the country cleanup and revitalize brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism. Cleanup Grants $200,000 for hazardous substances $200,000 for petroleum EPA has selected the Mercer County Improvement Authority for two brownfields cleanup grants. Both grants will focus on cleanup of the former Roebling Block 3 facility on Clark Street in Trenton. Hazardous substances grant funds will be used to clean up Lot 1.04, while petroleum grant funds will be used to clean up Lot 1.05. The sites are part of the former John A. Roebling & Sons Trenton complex, which manufactured wire rope for suspension bridges and elevator cables for over 125 years. The facility closed in 1974 and since that time, has been either vacant or underutilized. Hazardous substances contamination includes heavy metals and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. Petroleum contamination is from underground storage tanks containing heavy heating oil. Grant funds of both types also will be used for community engagement activities, including development of a community relations plan.
