Brownfields 2014 Cleanup Grant Fact Sheet
Wyoming County Economic Development Authority, WV
EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states.
communities, and other stakeholders to work together to
prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse
brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the
expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be
complicated by the presence or potential presence of a
hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002,
the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields
Revitalization Act was passed to help states and
communities around the country cleanup and revitalize
brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive
grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund
grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants.
Additionally, funding support is provided to state and
tribal response programs through a separate mechanism.
Cleanup Grant
$142,680 for hazardous substances
$57,320 for petroleum
EPA has selected the Wyoming County Economic
Development Authority for a brownfields cleanup
grant. Hazardous substances and petroleum grant
funds will be used to clean up the former Lusk
Lumber property, now referred to as the Barkers
Creek Industrial Park. Abandoned since 2000, the
10.9-acre property is located on State Route 10 in
the small community of Tralee. Prior to 1979, a
coal tipple was located on the site, followed by a
pressurized wood treatment facility from 1979 to
1990. The site was last used by a painting
company and for equipment and truck storage by
a solid waste collection company. Shallow soil is
contaminated with heavy metals and petroleum.
Grant funds also will be used to involve the
community through public meetings.
