I ^ | Brownfields 2010 Cleanup Grant Fact Sheet VTV Crook County Museum District, Sundance, l/l/Y PRO1"4 EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help states and communities around the country cleanup and revitalize brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism. Community Description The Crook County Museum District was selected to receive a brownfields cleanup grant. The target site is in the Town of Sundance (population 6,457), a small frontier community and the county seat of Crook County in northeast Wyoming. The decline in energy sector employment in Wyoming is reflected in the state"s 10-year high unemployment rate. In the past decade, development of greenspace has increased, resulting in rural sprawl and random development of residential and business properties. Currently, the county has no venue for cultural or historical research or space for art classes, local theater productions, or community events. The Museum District plans to reuse the targeted Old Stoney Renovation Project site in the heart of Sundance as a much-needed County Museum and Cultural Center. Cleanup of the target site is expected to facilitate its reuse and strengthen ties in the community while preserving greenspace. Planned redevelopment is expected to create 20 new jobs, expand the local tax base, and enhance property values. Cleanup Grant $200,000 for hazardous substances EPA has selected the Crook County Museum District for a brownfields cleanup grant. Hazardous substances grant funds will be used to clean up the Old Stoney Renovation Project site at 108 North Fourth Street in Sundance. The site building was constructed in 1923 and operated as a school until 1971, when it was used for a short time for offices and storage. The building is contaminated with metals and inorganic contaminants.
