I w 1 Brownfields 2017 Cleanup Grant Fact Sheet
Green Era Educational NFP, Chicago, IL
EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities,
and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess,
safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A
brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or
potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or
contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and
Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help states and
communities around the country cleanup and revitalize
brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants,
cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding
support is provided to state and tribal response programs
through a separate mechanism.
Cleanup Grants
$600,000for hazardous substances
EPA has selected the Green Era Educational NFP for three brownfields
cleanup grants. Hazardous substances grant funds will be used to clean
up three sites that comprise the approximately nine-acre parcel of vacant
land for the Anaerobic Digester/Renewable Energy Biogas facility at
650 West 83rd Street in Chicago. The areas of the three sites are 3.7
acres, 1.2 acres, and 4.1 acres. They have been vacant since 1988 and
were formerly used for storage of industrial, lumber, and paint products,
and as an impounded automotive storage yard. Soils are contaminated
with volatile organic compounds, metals, and polynuclear aromatic
hydrocarbons, and groundwater is contaminated with metals. Grant funds
also will be used to support community outreach activities.
