EPA's Brownflelds Program emp)vtts states, communities,
arid other stake holders to work together to prevent, assess,
safely clean up, arid sustainably reuse browrifields. k
brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which maybe complicated by the presence or
potential presence of a hazard:us substance, pollutant, or
contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief arid
Brownflelds Revitalizatiori Act was passed to help states arid
communities around the country cleanup arid revitalize
brownflelds sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment giants, revolving ban fund grants,
cleanup giants, arid job training grants. Additionally, finding
support is provided to state arid tribal response programs
through a sepirate mechanism.
Cleanup Grant
$127,000for hazardous subziances
EPA has selected the City of Pic kens for a browrifields cleanup grant.
Hazardous substances grant funds will be used to clean up the former
Rail Depot Property on 124 Railroad Street. Originally developed as a
passenger train depot with railway yard arid shipping warehouses as early
as 1289, the 1,9-acre site expanded in the 1930s and 1960s, when it
operated as a box car assembly operation until approximately 1922. Hie
facility then provided re pair services for the box cars urdil 1995, when it
was used for railroad locomotive repair ard refurbishing. The site is
currently contaminated with inorganic contaminants and metals. Grant
funds also mil be used to support community outreach activities.
