EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program emp)vtts states, communities,
arid other stake holders to work together to prevent, assess,
safely clean up, arid sustainably reuse brownfields. A
brov.nfie Id site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which maybe complicated by the presence or
potential presence of a hazard:us substance, pollutant, or
contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief arid
Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help states arid
communities around the country cleanup arid revitalize
brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment giants, revolving ban fund grants,
cleanup giants, arid job training grants. Additionally, finding
support is provided to state arid tribal response programs
through a sepirate mechanism.
Assessment Grants
$200,000for hazardous subdances
$200,000for petroleum
EPA has selected the City of Reading for two brownfields assessment
grants. Community-wide hazardous substances grant funds mil be used
to inventory sites arid conduct five Phase I arid five Phase ll
environmental site assessments. Grant furds also will be used to prepare
two cleanup plans arid support community outreach activities.
Commurity-wide petroleum grant funds will be teed to conduct the
same tasks at sites with potential petroleum contamination.
