EPA's Brownflelds Program emp)vtts states, communities,
arid other stake holders to work together to prevent, assess,
safely clean up, arid sustainably reuse brownflelds. k
brownfleld site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which maybe complicated by the presence or
potential presence of a hazard:us substance, pollutant, or
coritamiriarit. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief arid
Brownflelds Revitalizatiori .^ct was passed to help states arid
communities around the country cleanup arid revitalize
brownflelds sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment giants, revolving loan fund grants,
cleanup giants, arid job training grants. Additionally, finding
support is provided to state arid tribal response programs
through a sepirate mechanism.
Assessment Grants

EPA has selected the City of Dixon for two brownflelds assessment
grants. Community-wide hazardous substances arid petroleum grant
funds will be used to conduct 15 Phase I ard up to eight Phase II
environmental site assessments, arid prepare four cleanup plars. Grant
funds also mil be used to support coramuriity involve merit actviles.
