EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program emp)vtts states, communities,
arid other stake holders to work together to prevent, assess,
safely clean up, arid sustainably reuse brownfields. A
brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which maybe complicated by the presence or
potential presence of a hazard:us substance, pollutant, or
coritamiriarit. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief arid
Brownfields Revitalization .^ct was passed to help states arid
communities around the country cleanup arid revitalize
brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment giants, revolving loan fund grants,
cleanup giants, arid job training grants. Additionally, finding
support is provided to state arid tribal response programs
through a sepirate mechanism.
Assessment Grant

EPA has selected the Golden Triangle Planning arid Development
District Inc. for abrowrifields assessment coalition grant.
Corrariunity-wide hazardous substances grant funds will be used to
conduct 15 Phase 1 ard 12 Phase 11 environmental site assessments.
Corrariunity-wide petroleum grant funds mil be teed to conduct seven
Phase 1 arid six Phasa 11 environmental site assessments. Grant funds of
both types also will be used to expand a biowrifields inventory, conduct
cleanup planning, arid support c omniuriity involve roe nt activities.
Assessment activities will fee us on four census tracts within Chic taw.
Clay, Noxubee, and Oktibbeha Counties. Coalition partners are the Cities
of West Point arid Starkville, arid the Counties of Choctaw, Clay,
Lowndes, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Webster, arid Winston.
