EPA's Brownflelds Program emp)vtts states, communities,
arid other stake holders to work together to prevent, assess,
safely clean up, arid sustainably reuse brownfields. k
brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which maybe complicated by the presence or
potential presence of a hazard:us substance, pollutant, or
coritamiriarit. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief arid
Brownflelds Revitalizatiori .^ct was passed to help states arid
communities around the country cleanup arid revitalize
brownflelds sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment giants, revolving loan fund grants,
cleanup giants, arid job training grants. Additionally, finding
support is provided to state arid tribal response programs
through a sepirate mechanism.
Assessment Grants
$200,000for hazardous subdances
$100,000for petroleum
EPA has selected the City of Randieman for two brownfields assessment
grants. Community-wide hazardous substances grant funds mil be used
to complete five Phase 1 arid three Phasa n environmental site
assessments. Cbmmurdty-wide petroleum grant funds will be used to
complete four Phase I arid two Pha» II environmental site assessments.
Grant funds ofboth types also will be used to prepare a city-wide
inveritoiy ofbiownfields properties arid three cleanup plans.
