EPA's Brownflelds Program emp)vtts states, communities,
arid other stake holders to work together to prevent, assess,
safely clean up, arid sustainably reuse brownflelds. k
brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which maybe complicated by the presence or
potential presence of a hazard:us substance, pollutant, or
coritamiriarit. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief arid
Brownflelds Revitalizatiori .^ct was passed to help states arid
communities around the country cleanup arid revitalize
brownflelds sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment giants, revolving loan fund grants,
cleanup giants, arid job training grants. Additionally, finding
support is provided to state arid tribal response programs
through a sepirate mechanism.
Assessment Grants

EPA has selected the City of Tallahassee for twobrownfields assessment
grants. Community-wide hazardous substances arid petroleum grant
funds will be used to perform 10 Phase I arid five Phase II environmental
site assessments, arid conduct cleanup planning. Grant funds also mil be
used to support community outreach activities. Assessment activities will
focus on the Solvb Street corridor.
