| ^ \ Brownfields 2017 Assessment and Cleanup Grant Fact Sheet Economic Development and Industrial Corporation of Lynn, MA EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help states and communities around the country cleanup and revitalize brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism. Assessment Grants $200,000for hazardous substances $100,000for petroleum EPA has selected the Economic Development and Industrial Corporation of Lynn for two brownfields assessment grants. Community-wide hazardous substances grant funds will be used to perform six Phase I and five Phase II environmental site assessments, and prepare four cleanup plans. Community-wide petroleum grant funds will be used to perform four Phase I and three Phase II environmental site assessments, and prepare two cleanup plans. Grant funds of both types also will be used to conduct community outreach activities and establish a brownfields steering committee. Cleanup Grant $200,000for petroleum EPA has selected the Economic Development and Industrial Corporation of Lynn for a brownfields cleanup grant. Petroleum grant funds will be used to clean up a former gas station and automotive service facility site at 870 Western Avenue. The cleanup site was formerly used for residences, a gas station, retail space, a hotel, and a restaurant. Its soil and groundwater are contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. Grant funds also will be used for community outreach activities and redevelopment planning.
