ENERGY STAR® Labeled Products: Verification Testing
2012 Summary
In order to ensure that ENERGY STAR labeled products meet consumer performance
expectations on an ongoing basis, a subset of models are subject to verification testing each
year. This testing occurs through four complimentary programs, two of which are focused
exclusively on lighting.
Verification Testing Rates
ENERGY STAR qualified products available for sale in the United States are subject to
verification testing to ensure they continue to meet performance requirements. In 2012, 1169
models underwent verification testing. Of these:
•	830 models were tested through verification testing administered by EPA-recognized
certification bodies (CBs). Further details on the verification testing process for CBs are
available at www.eneravstar.gov/CBresources.
•	204 appliance, heating and cooling equipment, and commercial food service equipment,
models were tested through U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) administered verification
testing. The "ENERGY STAR Appliance Verification Testing - Pilot Program Summary
Report" 2012 report provides details on DOE-administered verification testing.
•	113 compact fluorescent lamp models were tested through the ENERGY STAR CFL
Third Party Testing and Verification program. A detailed report with test results from
Batch 3 is available at www.energvstar.gov/integritv.
•	22 luminaire models were tested through EPA administered verification testing under the
Quality Assurance Testing for Residential Light Fixtures and Solid State Lighting
Luminaires program. The Quality Assurance Testing Guidelines and Procedures Manual
and results are available at www.energystar.gov/integritv. Luminaires verification testing
transitioned to the CB-administered process on April 1, 2012.
The overall compliance rate was 93%. Table 1 provides a detailed summary of results.
Disgualification
ENERGY STAR qualified models that fail to meet ENERGY STAR requirements during
verification testing are subject to EPA's disgualification procedures. In 2012, EPA disqualified 87
unique models as a result of verification testing. Additional, separately-branded versions of the 87
models were also disqualified. Table 2 summarizes the 87 unique disqualified models by product
category.
The current lists of disqualified models are available at www.energystar.gov/integritv.
