Thompson School District, in partnership with Siemens Building Technologies, reduces operating costs
by $1,061,000 over 3 years.
Project Scope
Through a performance-based arrangement, Siemens Building Technologies, Inc. offered a plan to save energy
and money and also to complete maintenance improvements for the Thompson School District without requiring
any additional capital investments. Thompson School District entered into an initial 3-year Energy Management
Program with Siemens Building Technologies, which included a Resource Conservation Manager (RCM) and
numerous facility improvement measures. Siemens Building Technologies also benchmarked all of the district's
35 buildings using EPA's Energy Performance Rating System accessed through Portfolio Manager.
Project Summary
The Thompson School District receives energy tracking and benchmarking information through Portfolio
Manager, which heightens the staffs energy awareness and helps them improve operational strategies.
•	Energy Savings
The initial 3-year term of the Energy Management Program saved Thompson School District 7,724,630
kwh of electricity, 334,032 ccf of natural gas, and 79,966 kgal of treated water.
•	Investment
Annual investment of approximately $83,000, with a full performance guarantee.
•	Financial Return
The initial 3-year term of the Energy Management Program saved Thompson School District $557,000
in electric costs, $267,117 in natural gas costs, and $200,746 in treated water costs. Total savings in
the initial 3-year term exceeded $1,311,000.
•	Other Benefits
The Energy Management Program funds the Resource Conservation Manager (RCM). The RCM seeks
continual improvements at the facilities to maintain and enhance operational effectiveness.
Monitoring & Verifying Energy Savings
Initial savings from the performance contract were verified using the International Performance Measurement &
Verification Protocol (IPMVP), and the additional operation savings are monitored and verified using EPA's
Energy Performance Rating System.
Distinguishing Value
In addition to the energy savings, recognition from ENERGY STAR helped demonstrate the effort put forth and
results achieved by the Thompson School District to both staff and the community. Two schools in the district
have earned the ENERGY STAR label and two others received letters of recognition for excellent improvement
in energy efficiency. Also, the added comfort from having a third party, especially the Environmental Protection
Agency, verifying performance provides great value and gives an end user comfort in the analysis.
