Project Scope The project at Fonda-Fultonville Central School District included lighting retrofits, HVAC upgrades, and a cogeneration plant with full back up power. Project Summary The cogeneration plant at the school includes four 330 kW cogeneration engines and one diesel backup generator. The by-product from the plant powers an absorber chiller to provide cooling to some areas of the school. High efficiency lighting and upgrades air handlers were also installed as part of the project. • Energy Savings Energy savings resulting from this project were 40 kBtu/ft2. This equates to $301,459 savings per year. • Investment Fonda-Fultonville Central School District invested $3,928,143 in this project. • Financial Return The simple payback from this project is 13.03 years, not including State Aid. • Other Benefits There are many benefits associated with cogeneration plants. When a facility is provided power from a utility company there are electric losses associated that can be considered waste. Of the fuel used to make electricity, a large portion is lost in production, while another smaller portion is lost in delivery. On-site electrical generation eliminates delivery losses and uses the "waste" energy from production. Monitoring & Verifying Energy Savings The electric production of the cogeneration units is recorded monthly. The gas input purchased from the utility is also recorded monthly. The avoided cost of paying the utility for electricity is compared to the added cost of natural gas to determine the monthly cost savings. Distinguishing Value Atlantic Energy Services, Inc. assisted the schools in publicizing actions they took to improve the quality of the buildings. The school district was recognized by the community for its participation in the use of innovative technology. The community awareness and the positive recognition of the schools in area newspapers have been invaluable. <>EPA ATLANTIC United States Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY SERVICES INC. % mile ------- |
