Project Scope Typically schools spend more on energy costs than they do on books and supplies to educate our children. The Schools for Energy Efficiency (SEE) program is changing that dynamic by helping K-12 schools save energy and scarce resources by changing occupant behavior. The program provides a systemized energy management plan, training and utility tracking for school districts that give immediate and sustainable savings with the goal of reducing annual energy use by 10% and achieving ENEGY STAR recognition for building and organizational improvements. SEE empowers students, administrators and other employees to make changes in their day-to- day habits to save energy. Each year new energy-awareness campaigns and other no and low-cost strategies are added to continue a district's successful energy savings program. Project Summary Fourteen (14) school districts in Minnesota use the SEE Program's comprehensive energy management plan. The payback for these districts has been significant energy savings that can be used for other important educational purposes. • Energy Savings Since the beginning of the SEE program in 2003, the 14 participating school districts have saved more than 450,000 mmBtu in approximately 25 million square feet. The districts average between 10-20% in energy savings each year, totaling more than $6 million in avoided energy costs. • Investment No capital investment is required. The initial investment for school districts is an annual program fee that includes the systemized plan, materials, training, and support. • Financial Return School districts receive an immediate financial return. First year results typically exceed expectations and are recognized throughout the school district and community. On average, return on investment increases each year. • Other Benefits Participation in the SEE program provides not only a strong energy management plan, but also complete utility bill tracking and maintenance support. Utility bill tracking and maintenance support has helped school districts verify billing rates, find billing errors, and identify maintenance issues, all leading to substantial and sustainable energy savings. Monitoring & Verifying Energy Savings Participants can use a third-party utility tracking vendor or the SEE program's energy management software developed by Save More Resources (SMR) to measure and verify their energy savings. For those districts that utilize SMR, data is automatically entered into EPA's energy performance rating system for benchmarking. Distinguishing Value In addition to energy savings, SEE program participants are recognized within the ENERGY STAR program. Currently, 12 SEE school districts have been named ENERGY STAR Leaders and more than 30 school buildings qualify for the ENERGY STAR Label. School staff, students and community members have made a positive impact on their local environment while creating a generation of energy-conscious students with SEE. &epa SEE £™'Pro,ection SCHOOLS for Energy Efficiency1' ------- |
