Maurice River Township, NJ
EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities,
and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess,
safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A
brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or
potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or
contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and
Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help states and
communities around the country cleanup and revitalize
brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants,
cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding
support is provided to state and tribal response programs
through a separate mechanism.
Assessment Grant
$200,000for petroleum
EPA has selected Maurice River Township for a brownfields assessment
grant. Site-specific petroleum grant funds will be used to conduct a
Phase II environmental site assessment at the Cheli Sand and Gravel
facility on Block 120, Lot 3.01 and 3.02, on Schooner Landing Road.
Previously a sand and gravel mine and pit, the 13.6-acre site is currently
vacant. The buildings associated with the former operation have been
demolished, but the debris has not been removed from the site. Grant
funds also will be used to develop a cleanup plan and support community
outreach activities, including updated fact sheets and a community
relations plan.
Cleanup Grant
$200,000 petroleum
EPA has selected Maurice River Township for a brownfields cleanup
grant. Petroleum grant funds will be used to clean up the Ackley Garage
site at 3098 and 3102 Route 47, Block 222, Lot 25. Hie three-acre
cleanup site operated as a gas station, automotive repair shop, general
store, and residence until it was closed in the early 1990s. It is located
within 900 feet of the Maurice River. Contamination of soil and
groundwater at the site includes total petroleum hydrocarbons, volatile
organic compounds, metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and
ethylene dibromide. Grant funds also will be used to conduct community
outreach activities, including updated fact sheets, a community relations
plan, and handouts during public meetings.
