| ^ \ Brownfields 2017 Assessment and Cleanup Grant Fact Sheet Maurice River Township, NJ EPA Brownfields Program EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities, and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help states and communities around the country cleanup and revitalize brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding support is provided to state and tribal response programs through a separate mechanism. Assessment Grant $200,000for petroleum EPA has selected Maurice River Township for a brownfields assessment grant. Site-specific petroleum grant funds will be used to conduct a Phase II environmental site assessment at the Cheli Sand and Gravel facility on Block 120, Lot 3.01 and 3.02, on Schooner Landing Road. Previously a sand and gravel mine and pit, the 13.6-acre site is currently vacant. The buildings associated with the former operation have been demolished, but the debris has not been removed from the site. Grant funds also will be used to develop a cleanup plan and support community outreach activities, including updated fact sheets and a community relations plan. Cleanup Grant $200,000 petroleum EPA has selected Maurice River Township for a brownfields cleanup grant. Petroleum grant funds will be used to clean up the Ackley Garage site at 3098 and 3102 Route 47, Block 222, Lot 25. Hie three-acre cleanup site operated as a gas station, automotive repair shop, general store, and residence until it was closed in the early 1990s. It is located within 900 feet of the Maurice River. Contamination of soil and groundwater at the site includes total petroleum hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and ethylene dibromide. Grant funds also will be used to conduct community outreach activities, including updated fact sheets, a community relations plan, and handouts during public meetings.
