Brownfields 2017 Assessment Grant Fact Sheet
\W J Washington County, Wl

EPA Brownfields Program
EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities,
and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess,
safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields. A
brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or
potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or
contaminant. In 2002, the Small Business Liability Relief and
Brownfields Revitalization Act was passed to help states and
communities around the country cleanup and revitalize
brownfields sites. Under this law, EPA provides financial
assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant
programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants,
cleanup grants, and job training grants. Additionally, funding
support is provided to state and tribal response programs
through a separate mechanism.
Assessment Grant
$300,000for hazardous substances
$300,000for petroleum
EPA has selected Washington County for a brownfields assessment
coalition grant. Community-wide hazardous substances and petroleum
grant funds will be used to perform 24 Phase I and at least 16 Phase II
environmental site assessments, prepare eight cleanup plans, and create
three area-wide plans. Grant funds of both types also will be used to
update the current brownfields inventory, prioritize sites, and support
community involvement activities. Assessment activities will focus on
the North Downtown Revitalization Area of the City of Hartford,
Historic Downtown-Railroad Corridor of the Village of Jackson, Central
Downtown of the Village of Slinger, Northeast Corridor Area of the
Village of Richfield, Barton Village Area of the City of West Bend, and
the South Eisenbahn Trail Area of the City of West Bend. Coalition
partners are the Cities of Hartford and West Bend, and Villages of
Jackson, Richfield, and Slinger.
