Brownfields Tax Incentive Extended
On October 3, 2008, H.R.
1424 was signed into law by
the President. Section 318
of the bill provides for
expensing of environmental
remediation costs extending
the current brownfield tax
incentive till December 31, 2009, and is effective for
expenditures paid or incurred after December 31, 2007.
The tax incentive allows taxpayers to receive a current
federal income tax deduction for certain qualifying
remediation costs that would otherwise by subject to
capitalization. The extension is a timely benefit for
companies seeking to acquire or dispose of
environmentally impaired properties.

LANDFILL METHANE
OUTREACH PROGRAM
Landfill Gas Energy: A
Sustainable Energy Source
from Small Landfills in New
England Workshop
Thursday, December 11, 2008
9:30 AM -4:30 PM
University of Southern Maine
Lee Hall - Wishcamper Center
Portland, Maine
Concerned about rising energy prices for your solid
waste operations? Want to know how the gas at your
landfill can be sold on the carbon market?
Landfill gas energy (LFGE) projects can offer local
communities and businesses a source of low-cost,
clean-burning fuel for both heat and electric production.
In doing so, LFGE projects can provide significant
improvements to both local and global air quality by
eliminating methane emissions (a potent greenhouse
gas) and reducing the need for higher-cost fossil fuels.
Landfill gas energy can prove to be an economically
sound investment in your community.
Want to learn more? This workshop will provide
participants with information on renewable energy
policies and carbon finance examples necessary to
understand the potential for developing LFGE projects at
small landfills. If you manage a landfill or have an
interest in facilitating LFGE projects, this workshop is for
you.
Visit the workshop's information page for more
information, to review the preliminary agenda, and to
register online.
For more information about this workshop, contact
Rachel Goldstein at goldstein.rachel@epa.gov or John
Podgurski at podgurski.iohn@epa.gov.

Green Remediation Primer
The new Green Remediation Primer, a publication from
EPA's Brownfields and Land Revitalization Technology
Support Center (BTSC), is now available electronically at
this web site. More info about EPA's BTSC can be
found here.
Green remediation is the practice of considering all
environmental effects of cleanup actions and
incorporating strategies to maximize the net
environmental effects of those actions. The sustainable
practices emphasize the need to more closely evaluate
core elements of a cleanup project such as energy
requirements and air emissions.
Send your Brownfields-related items for inclusion in this
newsletter to Joe Ferrari at ferrari.ioe@epa.gov.
