&EPA Service Catalog What is a Service Catalog? A service catalog hosts descriptions of information technology (IT) services and related components (e.g. reusable software code). A service catalog could be in the form of a document, web page or digital application. EPA's current service catalog is called the Reusable Component Service (RCS). Why are Service Catalogs Important? Service catalogs enable users to identify resources that may be leveraged to help reduce costs, speed development, promote standardization and produce higher quality systems and applications. Improvements for EPA's Service Catalog (RCS) As EPA's technology evolves and expands there will be opportunities to modernize and simplify how service catalogs are constructed and made available through cloud-based solutions to all our partners - states, tribes, territories, industry and the public. Improvement to RCS are already underway to overcome its existing challenges. Enhancements ready October 2018 include: > More efficient data entry, search and discovery. o Users can find appropriate items with just a few clicks to select business function and/or categorical tags associated with each resource. > Reduced complexity for metadata presented on one screen (vs. the current multi-tab approach). Additional Information What is the Difference Between a Service Catalog and a Service Registry? A service catalog contains information about an item such as an API or shared service. A service registry tracks when/where any given service is actively running. A service catalog may include information about how to connect and/or utilize a service, but does not keep track of which services are active nor where they are running. For more information on service registries see the Service Registry fact sheet. For more information, contact: Steve Newman, newman.steve@epa.gov. (202) 566-2134. 1 September 2018 ------- |
