ground water and surface water transition
zones in Ecological Risk Assessments
(ERAs). This document encourages project
managers, ecological risk assessors, and
hydrogeologists to expand their focus
beyond shoreline wells and surface
sediments and to define and characterize the
actual fate of contaminants as they move
from a strictly ground water environment
(i.e., the commonly used "upland monitoring
well nearest the shoreline") through the
transition zone and into a surface water
environment.

ground water pump and treat (P&T) sites.
The report summarizes successful
implementation strategies, opportunities for

optimization. The report also identifies sites
that require no further follow-up and
discusses related initiatives underway at
EPA Headquarters and in the regional
offices.

EPA announced the withdrawal of the
June 13, 2008 final action to delete the
Fourth Street Abandoned Refinery
Superfund Site from the National Priorities
List (NPL) due to adverse comments that
were received during the public comment
period (73 FR 33721). The effective date of
this withdrawal is July 15, 2008.
