Tyco Electronics (AMP Glen Rock, Pennsylvania The Road to Reuse ~~~ This 33-acre facility is located in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania. This facility was operational from the 1950s to the late 1990s. There are two buildings at the facility, the Material Development Laboratory (MDL) and the Plastics Building. AMP Inc. conducted research on contact adhesives and lubricants and manufactured injection-molded plastic and polyester parts used in connector systems and applications. AMP Inc. stopped manufacturing operations at this site in the late 1990s. In 1999, a portion of the property was leased to M.A. Hanna, Inc., which manufactures the same polymers as AMP Inc. Approximate total acres and current use Approximate Acres Planned for in Reuse: 33 Current Use: Office space and warehouse distribution AMP undertook an investigation in mid-1984 to assess environmental contamination at the facility and determined that manufacturing processes resulted in the contamination of the groundwater at the facility by volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Remedial measures were taken to remove the contamination. These actions included the excavation and removal of contaminated soil, as well as the pumping and treating of groundwater. Migration of contaminated groundwater is controlled by the remedy and does not pose health and environmental risks to the surrounding communities. AMP has reduced the groundwater plume from 24-acres to less than 0.75 acres. Tyco Electronics purchased the site in early 2000 and is now the responsible party for the on-going remediation. The property was sold again to Penn-Mar Organization, though Tyco Electronics is still fully responsible for the environmental cleanup and monitoring. The Penn-Mar Organization converted the facility to office space and a warehouse distribution center. www. epa-.jrov/rea3wcmd/correctiveaction.htm For More Information EPA Region 3 Contact: Khai Dao, (215) 814-5497, dao.khai@epa.gov ------- |
