tfto sr4 "O *• v r*\ PROtfc UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY WASHINGTON D.C. 20460 OFFICE OF THE ADMINISTRATOR SCIENCE ADVISORY BOARD September 13, 2017 EPA-SAB-17-009 The Honorable E. Scott Pruitt Administrator U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. 20460 Subject: Science Advisory Board Invitation to Attend a Future Meeting Dear Administrator Pruitt: The Chartered Science Advisory Board (SAB) would like to invite you to a future SAB meeting to share your vision of the SAB's ongoing role in providing scientific advice and to hear about your priorities for the Environmental Protection Agency. In carrying out its mission of protecting human health and the environment, the EPA must ensure that its decisions and actions are based on the best available science. Congress established the SAB pursuant to the Environmental Research, Development, and Demonstration Authorization Act of 1978 (42 U.S.C 4365) to provide independent advice to the Agency's administrator on the adequacy of the scientific and technical basis for Agency actions. The SAB has for decades evaluated scientific information and provided advice to the EPA in a variety of ways. Frequently, the Agency requests that the SAB peer review EPA's scientific and technical products to ensure their scientific rigor, comprehensiveness and transparency. The EPA also requests in-depth studies and reports on new scientific issues emerging before the Agency. The SAB evaluates the semi-annual regulatory agenda to identify actions that would benefit from review of the adequacy of the underlying science supporting the action. It is also tasked with evaluating nominees for the Scientific and Technological Achievement Awards. Finally, since its inception, the SAB has undertaken a wide variety of independent evaluations of some of the most challenging emerging scientific issues that the Agency faces. At our August 29-30, 2017 meeting, the SAB tasked me in my role as Chair to formally invite you to meet with us at a future meeting. Such a meeting would afford you the opportunity to ------- highlight EPA activities and priorities and would allow for a dialog on how best the SAB can work to ensure the highest quality science supports Agency's policies and decisions. Members of the SAB come from a wide array of disciplines, geographic areas and employment sectors including industry, state government, non-governmental organizations and academia. Although the SAB embodies many viewpoints, all members share a commitment to the application of exemplary peer-reviewed science to guide EPA decisions. The SAB stands ready to serve and encourages you to take full advantage of the vital resource we can provide. The SAB looks forward to working with you to advance EPA's mission and "ensure that all Americans are protected from significant risks to human health and the environment where they live, learn and work."
