The Road to Reuse
~~~
Talon Inc. (Talon) operated their
Plant 7 at the 1305 South Main
Street facility in Meadville, PA
since 1910, when the company
began manufacturing boilers at
the 13 acre site. In 1932, Talon
started manufacturing zippers
at the facility, making Meadville
the "Zipper Capital." The
zipper manufacturing process
included metal fabrication and
metal finishing operations.
Additionally, Talon operated
a waste treatment plant, waste
disposal lagoon, and drum
storage areas on the property.
After Talon ceased operations
in the early 1990s, Coats
American, Talon's successor at
the property, cleaned up the
waste water treatment area,
treatment plant, and the lagoons
to meet PADEP requirements.
Upon completion of activities,
the property was purchased by
the Redevelopment Authority of
the City of Meadville. In 2001,
the Redevelopment Authority
of the City of Meadville began
site investigations and worked
non residential use.
In May 2008, Vantage Holding
Co. LLC purchased the 13-
acre property for $250,000
to be the location of their
consolidated corporate campus
and headquarters. The purchase
included the 66,000-square
foot former Talon building on
site. In 2008, the Pennsylvania
Governor provided Vantage and
the Redevelopment Authority
of the City of Meadville with
a $1.5 million Redevelopment
Assistance Capital Program
(RACP) grant to assist with the
renovations and redevelopment
of the former industrial site.
Vantage, a for-profit company
owned by 13 non-profit
community hospitals, will
work to renovate the facility to
move more than 200 of their
employees to the former Talon
Plant 7 site in August 2009. The
company is planning a ribbon
cutting ceremony on September
17, 2009 and has invited the
Pennsylvania Governor to
attend.
"We could have bought a
completely developed site in
Erie for half the money - but
we wanted to stay and keep
everything here. It's a lot of
work, but it is worth it. It will
do wonders for the community".
