DuPont - Glasgow Facility Belle, West Virginia Approximate total acres and current use Approximate Acres in Reuse: 450 Current Use: Recreational park, office space, manufacturing, storage The Road to Reuse ~~~ Located in Glasgow, New Castle County, Delaware, the 977-acre facility was acquired by DuPont in 1966 and was mostly farmland and undeveloped woodlands. DuPont constructed several buildings that were used for manufacturing medical instrument systems and products, and for the assembly of reverse osmosis water filters (Permasep Business). The facility was the subject of a Corrective Action Consent Order under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) RCRA program. DuPont conducted environmental cleanup activities at the property for over ten years under the direction of EPA and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). Based on the results of environmental investigation after cleanup activities were completed, DNREC recommended no further action. After a public comment period, a Certificate of Completion for t he cleanup was issued on March 15, 1999. As cleanup was completed and approval obtained from EPA and DNREC, DuPont was able to sell parts of the property no longer subject to RCRA Corrective Action. A private company acquired about 150 acres. The State of Delaware obtained approximately 300 acres, of which 200 acres was preserved as a state park and the remaining 100 acres is being leased to New Castle County to build a neighborhood park for use by the local community. Delaware's portion of the site preserves a sensitive wildlife habitat that includes a wetlands preserve and part of Sunset Lake, which is a favorite recreation area for fishing and boating.
