Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Success Stories in Academia
TRI-Based Class Research Project Used to Improve Awareness of Toxic
Chemicals and Polluting Industries
A research team at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay developed a teacher's guide for high school and university
students to learn about toxic releases in their communities. The interactive class project teaches students to use the TRI
website to identify facilities, chemicals, and, pollution prevention practices in their communities. A graduate student
conducted test sessions in local high schools which resulted in 75% of students
being able to define toxic chemicals and 85% of students being able to name the
industries or facilities that reported the most production-related waste in their
area. The team developed an instructor's guide as well as a TRI worksheet for
when class time is limited.
This project is part of the TRI 2013-2014 University Challenge. Every year,
partners with select universities to engage students in research projects that
utilize data from TRI. Participants receive national recognition, collaborate with
EPA and peers, participate in networking events, and engage in community
issues.
