&EPA Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Success Stories in Media TRI Data Used to Create a Tool for Identifying Coastal Industrial Sites in New Jersey at Risk of Spreading Pollution due to Coastal Flooding NJ Spotlight created an interactive map identifying thirty-seven New Jersey facilities from the Toxic Release Inventory that are at risk of spreading pollution due to rising sea levels and coastal flooding. The tool helps educate the public on the potential hazards posed by these facilities to encourage a statewide transition toward more sustainable manufacturing practices. Overall, 1,700 New Jersey sites could be affected due to an estimated coastal sea level rise of 17 inches by 2050 and 3.5 feet by 2100. The affected TRI facilities are in a range of industry sectors including manufacturing, metal mining, electricity generation, chemical manufacturing, and hazardous waste treatment facilities. Facilities identified in other EPA programs include wastewater facilities, oil facilities, brownfield sites, and pesticide facilities. The research presented by NJ Spotlight combines seal level data from Climate Central with facility data from EPA's Facility Registry Service (FRS). FRS includes facilities identified by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, TRI, and other EPA programs. This story is part of a larger series by local news organizations to investigate the impacts of New Jersey's toxic releases. NJ Spotlight. 2015.
