Brownfields

Congrats to the Brownfields Team of the Year!
On March 19, 2008, EPA's Bob Varney and Ira Leighton
announced that the winners of the 2008 QSWER
National Notable Achievement Award for the national
"Brownfields Team of the Year" are our own Jim Byrne
and Alan Peterson of the Brownfields Section, along
with Nora Conlon of our QA Section. The team was
selected for their collaborative efforts to restructure,
reorganize and reinvigorate the Brownfields Quality
Assurance program, resulting in more efficient and better
quality brownfields work performed in the Region by
EPA's contractors and its grantees. GOOD JOB!

faced by Local Governments in redeveloping
contaminated properties for productive reuse. Dates are
July 21 - 25, 2008. Being held for the 4th consecutive
year in Kansas City, Missouri, participants learn how
many communities have overcome obstacles and
stimulated successful redevelopment by characterizing
and assembling parcels, cleaning up sites, and using
public and private funds to attract redevelopment.
The course fee is $395 per participant, which includes a
continental breakfast and lunch. Rooms are separate.
Registration is now open and available on-line at this

LID for Big Box Sites
Here's a good document that was produced by the Low
Impact Development Center as guidance specifically for
big-box retailers to show them (and jurisdictions that
work with them) how they can use LID to make their
sites more water-friendly. The LID Center partnered with
Target Corporation in developing the document. You
can see the document on the ID Center's website .
Environmental Justice (EJ) is the fair treatment and
meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race,
color, national origin, or income with respect to the
development, implementation, and enforcement of
environmental laws, regulations, and policies. Learn
