Solutions Way Management Facility (Formerly: Genicom Corp. Waynesboro, Virginia The Road to Reuse ~~~ Approximate total acres and current use Approximate Acres in Reuse: 115 Current Use: Light Manufacturing, warehousing and distribution This 115-acre facility is located in Waynesboro, Virginia. From 1954 to 1983, General Electric (GE) owned and operated an electro-mechanical equipment manufacturing plant at this site. Prior to GE's ownership, the site was an airfield. Genicom Corp. bought the facility from GE in 1983 to manufacture computer printers and related equipment. The contamination of onsite and offsite groundwater is the main concern at this facility. It is believed that much of the contamination occurred prior to the enactment of the RCRA requirements in the 1980s. Waste solvents from painting and etching operations, plus inorganic waste generation from plating operations have contributed significantly to the environmental concerns at this facility. Trichloroethylene (TCE) and its degradation products have leached into the groundwater, migrating offsite to the north and south of the facility. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tested several private wells nearest the facility, finding that none have been contaminated by the facility's plume. Genicom Corp. filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 in the Delaware bankruptcy court on March 10, 2000. Solutions Way Management (SWM) has taken ownership of the facility, intending to market the property for light manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution. GE continues to perform the required environmental clean up work under an Order from EPA, while SWM provides access agreement and limited assistance to conduct the environmental work pursuant to a Prospective Purchaser Agreement signed with EPA M, www, epa-.jrov/rea3wcmd/correctiveaction.htm For More Information EPA Region 3 Contact: Andrew Fan, (215) 814-3426 fan.andrew@epa.gov ------- |
