The SKF USA Inc. (SKF) facility was a bearing-
manufacturing facility located south of the intersection
of Logan Boulevard and Plank Road in Altoona,
Pennsylvania. The facility property is occupied by
an approximate 225,000 square foot building and is
situated on approximately nine acres of land. The facility
manufacturing processes included machining, heat
treating, grinding, honing, assembling, and packaging.
Wastes generated from these manufacturing processes
included waste hydraulic oil, water-soluble synthetic
coolant, cutting oil, machining chips, and grinding
scrap. Operations at this facility began in 1952 and
ended in 2006.
On July 26, 2004, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that Current
Human Exposures Under Control Environmental Indicators had been met. On July 31, 2008,
EPA determined that Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Under Control Environmental
Indicator had been met. And, on November 10, 2008, EPA determined that no further
corrective action was necessary at the facility except for the implementation and maintenance of
institutional controls.
The property consists of two parcels, Parcel 1 and Parcel 2. The approximately 4-acre Parcel
2 is currently occupied by the Five Star Suzuki car dealer. Parcel 1 that was used for bearing
manufacturing facility has been sold to a developer.
