METROPOLITAN
UTILITIES DISTRICT
Background
The Metropolitan Utilities District is the natural gas and water utility for the City of Omaha
Nebraska and surrounding areas. The District was founded by the Nebraska Legislature and is
governed by seven directors elected by our customer owners. We serve natural gas to
approximately 225,000 customers and water to approximately 208,000 customers in the Omaha
area.
Historical Highlights
Mains
In 2008, the District began the process of replacing our aging low pressure
system that is comprised mostly of cast iron pipe. The age of the system
goes back to the year 1880 when a private utility sold manufactured gas in
Omaha. The last cast iron pipe was installed in 1960s. At the start of this
project, the District had approximately 580 miles of cast iron pipe in the
distribution system.
Services
As part of the process of replacing old cast iron distribution mains, we are
also simultaneously replacing the unprotected steel services to each
customer. These services are just as old as the mains. The new mains
currently being installed are operated at a higher pressure, so we are
moving all meters from inside the customer's building to outside to prevent
any high pressure gas from getting released into the building.
