National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation Segment: Distribution BMP Commitment Option Methane Challenge Partner Since 2018 OMB Control No. 2060 0722 Approval expires 08/31/2021 Background National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation (""NFGDC") is a natural gas utility serving approximately 750,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania. NFGDC has a deep appreciation for the vital role it plays in upholding standards of environmental protection in the communities where its customers and employees work and live. As part of that responsibility, NFGDC is committed to reducing methane emissions from its operations. Historical Highlights Upgrading Cast Ironand Unprotected Steel Mains NFGDC continuously upgrades its distribution system in order to ensure safe and reliable delivery ofnatural gas. These upgrades also benefitthe environment by reducing methane emissions. From2013 to 2017, upgrading mains has reduced NFGDCs estimated emissions by about 7,700 metric tons C02e per year on average. Thai's about the same as the emissions from over 1,635 passenger vehicles. Upgrading Unprotected Steel Services NFGDC also upgrades services - the small diameter pipe that connects the customer to the main - when mains are upgraded. On average, NFGDC replaces approximately 4,000 unprotected steel services every year resulting in another 3,400 metric tons C02e of reduced emissions annually. That's another 722 cars. o o 7> CI a H o 300000 250000 200000 150000 CO2© Emissions fromMains as reported to USEPA 100000 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 1 Unprotected Steel 1 Plastic 1 Protected Steel • Cast/Wrought Iron C02e Emissions from Services as reported to USEPA 80000 70000 60000 50000 40000 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 Unprotected Steel ¦Protected Steel ¦ Plastic Template last updated: 24 August 2018 EPA Form No. 5900 413 ------- National Fuel Gas Distribution Corporation Historical Fact Sheet Excavation Damages When someone damages a natural gas line, it's a serious matter. It's dangerous, costly, time consuming, and causes unnecessary emissions. NFGDC works hard to reduce damage to its system through a variety of initiatives. From public outreach campaigns to monitoring repeat offenders, NFGDC has reduced damages by almost 30%from2013 to 2017. While we are very proud ofthis accomplishment, we will continue our efforts to reduce damages as much as possible. 4.00 Damages Per l,000Locates 3.50 3.00 2.50 2.00 I I I I 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 Conservation and Efficiency Natural gas is a clean, abundant, and affordable source of energy. However, it is important that we all use energy wisely. NFGDC assists its customers by providing energy conservation tips and through its Conservation Incentive Program COP"). NFGDC's C1P has resulted in a reduction ofmore than 160,000 tons ofC02 over its lifetime. For more information and tips on energy conservation, see NFGDC's website at: https://www.nationalfuelforthought.com/ Innovation Innovation is a Guiding Principle at NFGDC and we support research aimed at detecting and reducing emissions fiomthe natural gas value chain. We constantly are evaluating new and evolving technologies, such as renewable natural gas derived from biomass, that may further reduce emissions.
